The performance of Handel’s Messiah by the Joyful Company of Singers and the Georgian Camerata, conducted by Peter Broadbent brings the atmosphere of Christmas alive. The beautiful Georgian church of St James in Piccadilly is the venue for this performance by candlelight.
In 1741, The Messiah was written by Handel and since then it has been associated with charity. In 1742 it was premiered in Dublin in aid of Society for Relieving Prisoners, the Charitable Infirmary and the Mercer’s Hospital. Handel himself continued to direct charitable performances of the piece despite his increasing blindness. The greatest success being a performance in aid of London’s Foundling Hospital.
