Overview
Formerly part of the Port of London, Docklands is the semi-official name for an area in the east of London, England. In Greater England it comprises parts of several boroughs (Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Newham and Greenwich). The docks were at one time the world’s largest port. Now the docks have been redeveloped for commercial and residential use. In 1971, the name London Docklands was used for the first time in a government report on redevelopment plans and since then has become virtually universally adopted. However, it had created conflict between the new and old communities of the London Docklands.
