Overview
Twinned with the German town of Eppingen in northwest Baden-Wurttemberg, Epping is a market town and civil parish in the Epping Forest district in the west of the county of Essex in England. Being the home of Peter, David, Betty and Helga, featured in many textbooks used to teach English to German children, Epping is popular in German. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the once-famous Epping Butter was much sought after, however is no longer made. But the equally popular Epping sausages are still manufactured by Church’s Butchers. The semi-rural ‘charm’ of Epping is currently facing threats by the proposal to develop new housing estates by using a number of sites (the largest being St. Margaret’s Hospital). However, residents are not in favor who still wishes to retain Epping’s semi-rural ‘charm’.
