Overview
Named after the Hole-bourne (the stream in the hollow) which flowed through the area from north to south, to the Thames, Holborn is an area of Central London, England. Like much of the rest of East London, Holborn poverty-ridden by the 19th century. Holborn in the 18th century was notorious for being the location of London’s most famous gay brothel. Much of the architecture and important buildings escaped significant damage during the Second World War although the area was bombed. The Royal Courts of Justice at Holborn boasts of 1,000 rooms and three and a half miles of corridors. Holborn is the center of London’s squadron of lawyers and is home to Gray’s Inn, Lincoln’s Inn and legal eagles with pinstripe suits and expensive briefcases.
