This 18th Century house was built for the first Earl Spencer, ancestor of Diana, Princess of Wales (1961-1997) in 1756-66. Opened to the public are its eight state rooms which are furnished with antique and neo-classical interiors. The first neo-classical interiors in Europe, these rooms were designed by John Vardy and James Stuart. However, Stuart’s gilded furniture has been reverted to its original location in the Painted Room.
