Designed by architect Lord Foster, Millennium Bridge spans the Thames between the Tate Modern and St Paul’s Cathedral. For over 30 years the Millennium Bridge is the first to be built in the city. It is also one of the world’s first horizontal suspension bridges.
The Millennium Bridge was dubbed the “wobbly bridge” when it hit the headlines last year after being forced to close just days after its public opening. Many experienced the nausea inducing ride but it did not threatened to undermine its structural integrity.
The London Evening Standard launched a light-hearted campaign to retain the wobble as it would make a really fun tourist attraction. Additional damping units which are similar in design to car shock absorbers have now been successfully installed by the bridge’s engineers Ove Arup and Partners. This beautiful bridge deserves to stake its claim as being among the finest in Europe, now that the wobble is gone.
