Sir Alexander Binnie’s late 19th-century Vauxhall Bridge design which replaced James Walker’s original cast-iron bridge was completed in 1906. Vauxhall bridge features a number of ornamental sculptures by FW Pomeroy and Alfred Drury comprising of five steel arches on masonry piers. The bridge’s relief is best viewed from Millbank. On one side, industry and agriculture are represented and on the other side Government, the arts and education. The southern side of Vauxhall bridge takes you towards Vauxhall Station (one of London’s less pleasant areas) overshadowed by the monolithic M15 building (and swanky new apartment buildings along Wandsworth Road). So be alert when you are here especially at night.
