Islands - Canvey Island
Off the coast of Essex, England, Canvey Island is an six meters below sea level in the River Thames. On that island there is also a town by the same name though this is sometimes shortened to Canvey. The Island has a total area of 18.45 square km and has a population of 34,479 according to Office for National Statistics (2008). The Island has a Roman history and the first settlement of Canvey occurred between 50-250 AD. Canvey Island finds mentioned in Joseph Conrad’s novel ‘Heart of Darkness’. It was a very fashionable place to visit and many thought its air to have healing properties during the Victorian era.
