Islands - Eel Pie Island
At Twickenham in London, Eel Pie Island is in the River Thames. The Island is only accessible by footbridge or boat. Earlier called Twickenham Ait, Eel Pie Island was also called The Parish Ait before that. The island was three separate aits even earlier.

In 1889 a bridge to the island was proposed which was completed not until 1957. At either end, today the island has about 50 houses and 120 inhabitants, some small businesses and nature reserves. Richmond Yacht Club and Twickenham Rowing Club which is one of the oldest rowing clubs on the Thames are found here.

Owned by Pete Townshend, the Eel Pie Studios, were the location of several significant pop and rock recordings. After the ait is named Townshend’s publishing company, Eel Pie Publishing Limited.
