At the eastern end of the Hoo Peninsula, the Isle of Grain (OE Grain) is in north Kent, England. The northern part of the Isle is almost all marshland even today. For birdlife the Grain Marshes are an important habitat. According to the 2001 census the Isle had a population of 1,731 and constitutes a civil parish. The south of the Isle is an important industrial area and was home to a major oil refinery until 1982. Built in the 1860s the Isle of Grain was the site of Grain Fort and until the 1950s was used for coastal defence. The tower was used as a boom control point in the World Wars.
