Situated in famous Kensington Gardens, Albert Memorial London lies right to the north of the popular Royal Albert Hall. Designed in 1872, it was erected in the memory of Prince Albert, the husband of Queen Victoria. With a height of about 176 feet, the memorial is designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in Gothic revival or Victorian Gothic style. The Albert Memorial London contains a central statue of Prince Albert, facing towards the Royal Albert Hall in the south direction. In the hand of the Prince’s statue is a catalogue of “The Great Exhibition” and is robed as a Knight of the Garter. Apart from the main central statue, the memorial is also noted for its other architectural work skills. The central area of Albert Memorial is encircled by a detailed “Frieze of Parnassus” sculpture that represents more than 160 composers, architects, poets, painters and sculptors. Apart from this, at each corner of central as well as of outer area, there are two allegorical sculptures (figurines that symbolize and personify abstract ideas) groups; four depicting Victorian industrial arts and sciences; and four other representing each continent-Europe, Asia, Africa and The Americas. Below the canopy of the memorial are mosaics that act as decorative artworks. You will also witness mosaics on every side. Each external mosaics shows a central allegorical figure of poetry, painting, architecture and sculpture and is supported by two historical statues on either side. Albert Memorial London also features eight figurines depicting the practical arts and sciences, carved in the pillars and niches of canopy. The canopy’s tower is topped by eight statues representing moral and Christian virtues. The top most level of the tower is occupied by a gold cross. As per foundation, the memorial rests on a large undercroft that consists of numerous brick arches to support the heavy weightage of the stone and metal used in the construction of the monument.
