Popularly known as Olympia, Olympia Exhibition Hall is a world-class exhibition centre located in West Kensington area of London city. Originally known by the name of “National Agricultural Hall,” the centre was opened in the 19th century. Designed by Andrew Handyside of Derby, Olympia Exhibition Hall in London covers an area of more than 3.5 acres. Currently, it features three exhibition halls; Olympia Grand Hall, Olympia National Hall and Olympia 2. The Grand Hall, measuring 450 feet in length x 250 feet in width, is one of the largest structures, covered by one span of iron and glass, in the UK. Olympia London has been the hosting venue of various annual events in London. Olympia London International Horse Show, InfoSecurity Europe, Unified Communications Expo, WDYTYAL, BETT, The Educational Technology Show and BBC Good Food London are some of these events. Besides these events, the center had also hosted the International Motor Exhibition since 1905 to 1936. Currently, Olympia Exhibition Hall along with Earl’s Court is operated by EC&O Venues, which is a privately-owned company that creates centres mainly focusing on exhibitions, conferences and special events business. The most important feature attached with Olympia Centre is its high roof. Consisting 1200 ton iron frames along with 85 tons of glass and 75 tons of Zinc, the roof was carried on 10 cast iron columns that also bear a ball and socket feature both at the top and bottom to absorb stress. The roof structure was incredibly strong and the only replacement made till date was of glass only. The glass was replaced by sealed heat treated solar reflective system in 1991. On the northern side of the Grand Hall is located “Prince’s Suite,” which includes management offices and meeting rooms. The other building of the centre that is noteworthy is the striking Minor Hall or Pillar Hall. It is an oak-paneled banqueting hall that also features marble columns and an impressive ceiling. The Pillar Hall is one of those fascinating public rooms that are least known in London.
